Family Guy and American Dad are similar in their style, approach and comedy. But each are successful in their own way. Stephanie Camello breaks down the reasons to watch both and what each has to offer to its audiences.
Family Guy
- This is the original Seth MacFarlane masterpiece; it's what really brought fame to his name.
- It started in 1999 and went head-to-head with The Simpsons which by that time had been around for 10 years. And it managed to be successful after some time and gain its own following.
- There are many, many characters with their own catch phrases or accents, most of which are voiced by a handful of voice actors, MacFarlane voicing the most characters, but is most famous for Peter, Stewie and Quagmire.
- Dirty jokes, innuendos, inappropriate jokes that we laugh at because they are true observations of society. It can also be very gratuitous in nature.
- Specific characteristics tied to each character.
- Main characters are voiced by actors like Mila Kunis, Alex Borstein, and Seth Green and the late Adam West and Carrie Fisher.
- Has tons of famous celebs who do recurring voices or guest voice a character.
- Cutaways, which are unique to Family Guy and to the MacFarlane style.
- Unique musical numbers as well as reviving movie and music classics from the 1930s onward.
- Full on Star Wars tribute shows.
- Series was cancelled and then came back due to popular demand, proving that the show had legs and a following large enough to demand its return!
*** If you want more in your face, brutally honest jokes and innuendos bookended with random cutaways of pop culture references and Star Wars parodies, then Family Guy is your go-to! Check them out on Fox.
American Dad
- Started in 2005.
- MacFarlane voices Stan and Roger but has other actors doing a lot of the other memorable characters as well, like Scott Grimes, Wendy Schaal and Patrick Stewart.
- Scott Grimes who voices Steve has brought huge contributions to the show with his professional singing style and high-pitched voice he uses for Steve. The enthusiasm, pazzaz, personality and overall character he brings to the show stands out and makes the viewer pine for more Steve songs!
- More unique musical numbers.
- With Roger as an alien, there's flexibility for more unrealistic plots. Roger's hundreds of "personas" allow for tons of different storylines that don't change the overall structure of the show.
*** If you want a mismatched family with a hilarious government employee as the dad and a ditzy mom with a feminized son and macho-liberal daughter with an alien who changes "personas" often with the occasional perfect Steve song, then American Dad is for you! Check them out on TBS.
