Stephanie Camello Presents: A St. Patrick's Day Special

Who: Saint Patrick

What: He is the patron saint of Ireland. He brought Christianity to Ireland and is known as "The Apostle of Ireland."

When: His work of bringing Christianity to Ireland took place in the early 5th century. Each year, St. Patrick's Day takes place on March 17th. This date commemorates his death which took place on March 17th, 461.

Where: He was actually born in Britain at the end of the 4th century. He was kidnapped by Irish raiders and sold as a slave to a Celtic priest in Northern Ireland. Today, most Irish people live in Ireland, England, America, Canada and Australia!

Why: He is celebrated religiously because of his valiant and successful efforts that brought Christianity and the Catholic Church into Ireland. Ireland went on to become one of the most Catholic countries in the world and produced a high number of Catholic priests. He is also celebrated in secular society for bringing about a true Irish culture and heritage that is fervent as ever to this day!

How: Celebrations take place in Ireland, the U.K., America and other places where there is Irish heritage! Most people celebrate by wearing green, drinking Irish beer and whiskey, attending a Catholic mass in honor of St. Patrick, eating traditional Irish foods like corned-beef, potatoes and cabbage, marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade, waving an Irish flag, decorating your home or office with green or Irish-type decorations, eating green-colored foods, singing traditional Irish songs or just wishing others a "Happy St. Patrick's Day." The most common American tradition is to wear green, eat green colored treats and drink Irish brand beer and whiskey while having fun with friends.

Stephanie Camello Compiles the Origins of U.S. State Names

Alabama - Native American Choctaw name meaning “vegetation gatherer.” Alaska - Aleut language translates “Alaska” to “the object toward which the action of the sea is directed.” Arizona - Spanish word “Arizonac” which has origins from the Native American O’odham tribe’s word meaning “small spring.” Arkansas - The French pronunciation of the Quapawa Indians word for which the Algonquin tribe referred to as “akansa.” The French pronunciation was “Arcansas.” The reason we don’t say the “S” is because on an 1881 act passed by the state to solve a dispute between two senators who disputed over the pronunciation. We now pronounce it the French way with the silent “S.” California - The name of an island in a Spanish 16th Century novel for which the Spanish explorers named the land they thought was an island. Turns out it was what we think of today as the state of California! Colorado - Named after the C...
